Spring is the best time to practise your skills – the water is still too cool for swimming, and the waterways are still relatively empty, making RC boats the perfect companion for fun days at the lake.
What is an RC boat?
RC boats are remote-controlled models of boats or ships that can travel on water. These miniature vessels are easy to transport on excursions to lakes, and are also ideal for use in garden ponds. We offer an extensive range of different models – in addition to RC yachts, you will also find a fishing boat, a fire-fighting vessel and speed boats.
How does a remote-controlled boat work?
Remote-controlled boats require the following components: a battery for supplying power, a motor, a transmitter in the remote control, and a receiver in the model. They are controlled wirelessly via a remote control – moving the controls sends a wireless signal to the boat, which then converts the signal into the corresponding movements. This allows you to move the boat forwards, backwards, left and right across the water, as well as accelerate and brake. The complexity of the controls depends on the boat type and the remote control. For example, sailing boats with a sail that has to be hoisted and adjusted manually with a remote control are typically for professionals who have extensive experience with RC boats, whereas simple racing boats are easier to control.
Who are remote-controlled boats designed for?
In short, remote-controlled boats are suitable for all boat enthusiasts. However, they are not designed for young children, who must not be left unsupervised when playing with a model – some models contain small parts that present a choking hazard. Children do not acquire the necessary fine motor skills to control an RC boat until five or six years of age. Once they reach this age, they can start to operate remote-controlled boats under the supervision of an adult. Ideally, you should start with cheaper entry-level models without overly complex controls. In summary: remote-controlled boats are suitable for children aged five and above (under the supervision of an adult), as well as all older children and adults who are passionate about boats and ships.
What must I pay attention to when driving an RC boat?
Before setting sail, there are a few important points to consider preventing you from running into trouble:
Check your insurance cover
In many cases, RC boat owners don’t think of insurance cover until it’s too late. When you use an RC boat, there is the risk of damage to property or even personal injury. For this reason, you should consider whether the use of remote-controlled boats is covered by your liability insurance. If not, you should purchase an additional policy for your RC boats.
Pay attention to the range of the remote control
Make sure you know the range of your remote-controlled boat. This refers to the maximum distance between the remote control (transmitter) and the model (receiver). This distance should not be exceeded during use.
Check the battery level and runtime
Check the charge level of the battery and estimate how long you can use the remote-controlled boat for before it will need to be recharged. In general, you should always start out with a fully-charged battery.
Where can I use RC boats?
Remote-controlled boats are permitted at many public lakes, except bodies of water in nature reserves, or at lakes in inhabited areas, where certain restrictions may apply. These lakes are typically marked with corresponding warning signs, which must be observed. If you would like to use your RC boat on private land, make sure that you talk to the landowner in advance and obtain their permission.

Can I also use RC boats in the sea?
Many model owners aspire to sailing on the open ocean. However, not all models are suitable for this. Whilst all RC boats can be used in freshwater, only some are designed for use in seawater. If you do use such a model, it should be cleaned thoroughly after use and wiped dry to prevent damage to the metal parts.
How fast can RC boats travel?
Maximum speeds depend on the model and its motor. When driven by professionals, top-range models can reach speeds of 100 km/h and more. Entry-level models tend to be slower, but can still reach maximum speeds of between 20 km/h and 50 km/h on average.
How much does an RC boat cost?
As you’d expect, remote-controlled boats vary in price. Whilst entry-level RC boats can be picked up for as little as 50 euros, more powerful and detailed models can easily cost more than 200 euros.
