Parmi les biplans les plus connus de l'Histoire de l'Aviation, il se distinguait par son extraordinaire manœuvrabilité. Il était également robuste et bien armé pour la période historique grâce aux deux mitrailleuses Breda-Safat de 12,7 mm qui tiraient à travers le disque de l'hélice. Le FIAT CR 32 connut son baptême du feu avec l'Aviation Légionnaire, durant la Guerre Civile Espagnole et il prévalut immédiatement sur les monoplans de chasse de fabrication soviétique comme les Polikarpov I-16 qui équipaient les services de la l'Aviation Républicaine. Grâce à son extraordinaire manœuvrabilité et à la formation des pilotes italiens, le CR 32 prévalut aussi sur les avions dont la conception était la plus moderne et la plus actuelle. En partant du grand succès du biplan C.R. 32 « Freccia », qui fit preuve de fiabilité et d’efficacité opérationnelle pendant la Guerre civile espagnole, Fiat développa, à la fin des années 1930, le nouveau C.R. 42 « Falco ». Ce nouveau chasseur monoplace biplan conservait, comme son prédécesseur, un train d’atterrissage fixe et un cockpit ouvert, mais il intégrait certaines innovations, telles qu’une structure entièrement en aluminium et en acier recouverte de métal et de toile. Son moteur radial Fiat A.74 refroidi par air permettait au C.R. 42 d’atteindre une vitesse de 400 km/h. Il se distinguait par une manœuvrabilité exceptionnelle, très appréciée des pilotes, mais souffrait des limitations inhérentes à la configuration « biplan », qui affectaient ses performances opérationnelles par rapport aux chasseurs monoplans plus modernes et puissants. Une version dédiée à la chasse nocturne fut développée, avec des échappements prolongés pour réduire, durant la nuit, la visibilité auprès de l’ennemi. Attention !
