Le Lockheed P-38 Lightning fut, sans aucun doute, l'un des avions les plus originaux en termes de design et d'agencement aérodynamique de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il s'agissait d'un chasseur lourd révolutionnaire avec un fuselage à double poutre, dans lequel étaient installés les deux moteurs, et le pilote était positionné dans un cockpit avancé au centre de l'avion.
