Besatzung Designed at the beginning of the Second World War, the Crusader was one of the most important British "Cruiser" tanks reaching a production of over 5,000 units. Equipped with Christie suspension with large diameter rolling wheels, the Crusader possessed remarkable driving skills on rough terrain. The first versions of Mk. I and Mk. II were armed with a 2 pdr cannon. later replaced by the more powerful 6 pdr cannon. in the Mk.III version. Lacking adequate armor against enemy fire, it was also very vulnerable to enemy mines and anti-tank guns, and its armament was often inadequate in front of similar German vehicles. Sur les cartes du plan de bataille, il était en effet identifié comme un carrefour routier important que les Allemands pouvaient utiliser pour mener des contre-attaques rapides vers les plages d'Utah et d'Omaha. Il était donc stratégique d'occuper immédiatement le village et d'en assurer la défense par les troupes aéroportées américaines. Au petit matin du 6 juin 1944, les parachutistes des 82e et 101e divisions, les deux célèbres divisions aéroportées américaines, ont occupé le centre de la petite ville française après d'intenses combats. Article number: 510006198 Product: 1:72 Montecassino'44 GUSTAV Line Battle During the Italian campaign, in the period from January to May 1944, the allied forces under the command of General Mark Clark, advanced upon the German 10th Army commanded by General Heinrich von Vietinghoff, who were entrenched in defensive positions along the Gustav line. The cornerstone of the Gustav line was the small town of Cassino which controlled the river Liri valley. Cassino itself was dominated by the historic Benedictine abbey of Montecassino, which was an important strategic observation and defensive position of the German forces. The determined resistance offered by the German troops, who held their positions for almost four months, was assisted by the difficult weather conditions, which hindered the allied advance. Fierce fighting ensued to try and oust the Germans from their stubbornly held defensive line. The United States supported the South Vietnam Government against the North Vietnamese regular troops flanked by the People’s Liberation Armed Forces, commonly known as Vietcong. The ground war started on 1965 and ended only ten years later with the fall of Saigon of the evacuation of the latest American soldiers. The long years of war, started with an aerial campaign of bombing on North Vietnam, were characterised by clashed and fighting in tough rural environment with a vegetation and a structure of villages that provided ideal conditions for the guerrilla war. Unfortunately a huge number of civilians were involved in the war and in the military operations. The American military supremacy, which saw the massive use of helicopters and armoured vehicles, was counterbalanced by the effective North Vietnamese and Vietcong tactics.
