The French colonial policy of the XIX century was based on a progressive expansion in the North African and Sub-Saharan territories. A lot of violent military clashes between the French Foreign Legion troops and the Tuareg Berber troops took place especially in the most remote areas of the Algerian territories were several outposts and forts were built by the French. However, the local populations could not compete against the more advanced weapons of French Army. The fighting ended with the signatures of the 1905 and 1917 treaties. The Historical events inspired a lot of novels and movies. The most famous movie could be considered "Beau Gest" of 1939 based on the 1924 novel of the same title by P.C. Wren.

The few reinforcements were employed by Germans in various counterattacks but after some days of fighting the defensive lines collapsed under the pressure of Allied troops. During this operation the town of Bastogne and its surroundings where encircled by the German troops. Inside the pocket around 15.000 American soldiers stood up to the repeated assaults of the German army for approximately ten days. The legendary resistance was that of the US 101st Airborne division inside the town. On December 22nd the General von Lüttwitz , who was the German commander, submitted a demand for surrender to the encircled units. The answer of the American commander in Bastogne, Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe was "NUTS". Then, Germans renew their attacks trying to occupy the city but without getting results. On December 26th some soldiers of the General George Patton’s Third Army reached the besieged troops, breaking the siege and evacuating the wounded. The American Army lost more than 3.000 soldiers during this battle.
