The Panther was produced as a reaction to the tanks encountered by German forces during Operation Barbarossa. Having considered Soviet tank designs to be obsolete, German tank crews were stunned when they came up against concepts like sloped armour on the T-34 and the sheer size and brutality of the KV-1. The Panther, designed as a kind of multi-purpose tank, took Soviet innovations and supersized them.

Entering the battlefield from 1943 and weighing in at around 45 tonnes, this was a huge machine. It was technologically ambitious, seeking to combine armouring with speed and firepower. It mounted one of the best guns of the war - the dependable 7,5 cm Kw.K 42 L/70.

However, in needing the tank on the field as quickly as possible, many shortcuts were taken in the manufacture and testing of the Panther. Reliability problems and mechanical failures became the bane of its crews. It was an over-engineered design that left no room for cutting corners. Roughly 6000 Panthers were made, but arrived too late to make a difference. It cannot be denied that if it had arrived earlier, and with all its high-tech features operational, the path of history would have deviated.

Das Vorbild: Officially designated as the Light Tank M24, the British gave this tank the service name ‘Chaffee’. Arguably the best light tank of the war, the vehicle was intended as a replacement for the M5 Stuart. The design departed quite a lot from those of earlier light tanks. Twin Cadillac engines and Hydramatic transmission enabled the vehicle to achieve high speeds, while torsion-bar suspension granted it good cross-country capabilities. A new lightweight 75mm gun packed decent firepower into the tank’s turret which, coupled with its low silhouette, was a nice advantage for a light tank. The M24 was used during the later part of World War II and in several post-war conflicts, from the Korean War to the First Indochina War.

World of Tanks: World of Tanks ist das einzige Team-basierte Multiplayer online Panzer-Actiongame. Ein Phänomen, das im Jahre 2010 auf PCs begann und 2014 weltweit über 85 Millionen registrierte Mitspieler hatte.

Das Vorbild: The M4 Sherman medium tank was the primary tank used by the United States during World War II. It was the first and most basic production version of the Sherman line and also the most commonly-produced U.S. tank of WWII. It essentially formed the backbone of U.S armoured forces at that time. As many as 49,234 vehicles were produced. The Sherman evolved from the M3 Medium Tank, retaining a lot from this previous design. However, the M4’s design introduced a fully-traversable turret in combination with a 75mm gun. To facilitate production, the Sherman tank family was modified into a perplexing array of variants – from the basic M4 through to the famous "Easy Eight". Shermans first saw combat with British forces in North Africa in late 1942, against the Panzer III and Panzer IV. They would then go on to be used on all fronts until the war’s end. The tank was easy to produce en masse and quite reliable. A lack of firepower and narrow tracks, which often caused it to get stuck on muddy terrain, were its main weaknesses.

World of Tanks: World of Tanks ist das einzige Team-basierte Multiplayer online Panzer-Actiongame. Ein Phänomen, das im Jahre 2010 auf PCs begann und 2014 weltweit über 85 Millionen registrierte Mitspieler hatte.

The final official German designation for the tank was Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger Ausf.E, often shortened to just "Tiger I". The Tiger’s development was started in 1937 by the company, Henschel. Mass production began in 1942 with a total of 1347 vehicles being manufactured over its production run. The initial model used suspension similar to that of the Panther. The hull extended over the tracks to accommodate the wide-ringed turret which could mount the infamous 8,8cm Kw.K 36 L/56.The Tiger first saw combat in the fighting for Leningrad and soon found itself featured in the majority of German armoured engagements. Even though production was discontinued in the summer of 1944, the Tiger I continued to see action until the end of the war. It was the first German heavy tank in WWII and soon proved itself to be extremely formidable against Allied and Soviet units which mostly consisted of Sherman tanks and T-34s at the time.

World of Tanks: World of Tanks ist das einzige Team-basierte Multiplayer online Panzer-Actiongame. Ein Phänomen, das im Jahre 2010 auf PCs begann und 2014 weltweit über 85 Millionen registrierte Mitspieler hatte.

Official German designation: Sturm Geschütz (StuG) 8.8cm Pak43/2 (Ferdinand/Elefant). The StuG 8.8cm was based on the unsuccessful Porsche Tiger chassis fitted with a heavily armored superstructure in the front and a mounted 8,8cm Pak 43/2 L/71 gun. A total of 90 vehicles were produced; they first saw combat in the Battle of Kursk (Operation Citadel). It was built in 1943 under the name Ferdinand, after its designer Ferdinand Porsche, but was soon renamed. After the Battle of Kursk, the remaining 48 vehicles were pulled out of service and given an overhaul. This included a ball-mount machine gun in the front along with a commander’s cupola. The name "Elephant" was soon decided upon. The vehicle was received with mixed feelings. It provided good protection with its thick armor but was severely unreliable in its mechanics due to the use of non-standard parts. Nevertheless, the Ferdinand/Elephant might well have been the most successful tank destroyer employed during the war, with a kills to losses ratio of approximately 10:1.

"V-DAY" Special Edition

NEW DECAL VERSIONS: FRANCE <(>&<)> SOUTH AFRICA (in addition to the existing US version)

In 1941, after the German attack on Russia, it became clear to the UNITED STATES that possibility of an American involvement in the war was becoming more and more inevitable. For this reason, President Roosevelt ordered substantial production increases of the medium tank M4. The tank was not a completely new model, since it derived from the previous model M3 "Grant". The Sherman had some major improvements on the superstructure and on the armament as well as on the welded or cast hull. The "General Sherman", under which name the new tank was soon to be known, was equipped with a 75 mm gun, which was, however, insufficient against the German Tanks. This necessitated a series of changes, including a completely new turret as well as a 76 mm gun, which would be more efficient than the previous one. The new prototype was given the designation M4 A1. In January 1944, the new type was introduced. Until the end of the war, about 3400 pieces were produced. Notwithstanding the improvements, there were still many defects, one of them being the lack of protection. Frequently the crew was forced to protect the tank sides and the front with sandbags. In some instances the most exposed track sections were covered and sometimes even cement or steel blocks were attached. Tanks to its numerical superiority, the tank was able to match the German tanks, using its great maneouverability and its excellent 76 mm gun. M4 A1 took part in the invasion of Normandy and in all European theatres.
