Das Vorbild: The M4 Sherman medium tank was the primary tank used by the United States during World War II. It was the first and most basic production version of the Sherman line and also the most commonly-produced U.S. tank of WWII. It essentially formed the backbone of U.S armoured forces at that time. As many as 49,234 vehicles were produced. The Sherman evolved from the M3 Medium Tank, retaining a lot from this previous design. However, the M4’s design introduced a fully-traversable turret in combination with a 75mm gun. To facilitate production, the Sherman tank family was modified into a perplexing array of variants – from the basic M4 through to the famous "Easy Eight". Shermans first saw combat with British forces in North Africa in late 1942, against the Panzer III and Panzer IV. They would then go on to be used on all fronts until the war’s end. The tank was easy to produce en masse and quite reliable. A lack of firepower and narrow tracks, which often caused it to get stuck on muddy terrain, were its main weaknesses.

The final official German designation for the tank was Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger Ausf.E, often shortened to just "Tiger I". The Tiger’s development was started in 1937 by the company, Henschel. Mass production began in 1942 with a total of 1347 vehicles being manufactured over its production run. The initial model used suspension similar to that of the Panther. The hull extended over the tracks to accommodate the wide-ringed turret which could mount the infamous 8,8cm Kw.K 36 L/56.The Tiger first saw combat in the fighting for Leningrad and soon found itself featured in the majority of German armoured engagements. Even though production was discontinued in the summer of 1944, the Tiger I continued to see action until the end of the war. It was the first German heavy tank in WWII and soon proved itself to be extremely formidable against Allied and Soviet units which mostly consisted of Sherman tanks and T-34s at the time.

Official German designation: Sturm Geschütz (StuG) 8.8cm Pak43/2 (Ferdinand/Elefant). The StuG 8.8cm was based on the unsuccessful Porsche Tiger chassis fitted with a heavily armored superstructure in the front and a mounted 8,8cm Pak 43/2 L/71 gun. A total of 90 vehicles were produced; they first saw combat in the Battle of Kursk (Operation Citadel). It was built in 1943 under the name Ferdinand, after its designer Ferdinand Porsche, but was soon renamed. After the Battle of Kursk, the remaining 48 vehicles were pulled out of service and given an overhaul. This included a ball-mount machine gun in the front along with a commander’s cupola. The name "Elephant" was soon decided upon. The vehicle was received with mixed feelings. It provided good protection with its thick armor but was severely unreliable in its mechanics due to the use of non-standard parts. Nevertheless, the Ferdinand/Elephant might well have been the most successful tank destroyer employed during the war, with a kills to losses ratio of approximately 10:1.

The Panzerkampfwagen I was the first German mass-produced tank. Born in the early '30s to provide to the German army a light tank, able to stay in line with the constraints imposed by the Treaty of Versailles, which could be useful for the training of the crews of future Panzer Divisions and able to support the operations of the infantry. Armed with two 7.92 mm machine guns mounted in the turret, it was very

maneuverable but characterized by a thin armor. The Ausf. B version was improved in the powertrain and in the track system. It took part in the Spanish Civil War and contributed to the first Wehrmacht winning operations during the Second World War as the invasion of Poland and France. However, due to its weapons and its armor, the Panzer I’s performance in combat was limited and became very soon rather old compared to other light tanks of the era.
