During the war, new versions with differing operational profiles were introduced. The Ju-87G was developed as an "anti-tank" version of the Stuka, to counter the vast array of enemy armored vehicles deployed on the eastern front post 1943.The Stuka "ace" Hans Ulrich Rudel proposed the addition of two 37 mm Flak 18 cannons housed in underwing pods to better counter this developing threat. Stylishly designed from an aerodynamical perspective, it was fitted with the powerful German DB 601 engine produced under license by the Italian aeronautical industry. The engine and overall aeronautical performance of the aircraft provided the Regia Aeronautica with a fighter capable of actively engaging Allied fighters. The flight performance compared to the previous generation of fighters equipped with radial engines, such as the Fiat G-50 and the Macchi Mc-200, was in fact much better. Manoeuvrable and fast (it was able to reach 600 km h), it was armed, in the early versions, with two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns installed in the nose. The Tornado GR.1 (Ground Attack/Reconnaissance) was the initial version adopted by Royal Air Force in early ‘80s. In 1996 the Tornado was upgraded to the Gr.4 standard which was characterized by improved operational capabilities, new avionics systems for navigation and the adoption of new ‘on-board’ technologies. In Italy, a similar version is produced on license by Agusta Westland under the designation AB-212. It is a development of model 205, the main difference being an elongated fuselage. In the first half of the 2000s, the AB 212 was massively updated to enhance its operational capacity. It has been fitted with two 7,62mm swivelling machine guns on the tailgates, and the defensive equipment has been upgraded with antimissile flare launchers and additional ceramic and kevlar armour to protect the crew. The F-14A first flew on 21st December 1970, and production-line models started reaching squadrons in 1973. Squadrons VF-1 and VF-2 accompanied the last voyage of the aircraft carrier Enterprise in Vietnam, yet never saw combat. The Tomcat would not see action until 1981, when it shot down two Libyan Su-22s during an encounter over the Gulf of Sirte. Article number: 510002767 Product: 1:48 Macchi MC. 200 Series XXI-XXIII Designed by the celebre engineer Mario Castoldi, the Macchi Mc 200 has represented a significant production evolution of the Italian fighter aircrafts. Compared to the biplanes Fiat CR 32 and Fiat CR 42 that were the main Italian fighters squadrons structure at the beginning of the Second World War, the Macchi Mc 200 distinguished itself, together with its contemporary Fiat G50, for its monoplane configuration and for the entire metallic airframe structure. The 14 radial cylinder Fiat A.74 RC 38 double star engine was able to release 840 HP and allowing the Macchi Mc 200 to reach speeds of 500 Km/H. In comparison with the Allied fighters, it resulted to be underpowered and, neither the less, a lower fire capacity. Two 12,7mm Breda-SAFAT machineguns mounted over the characteristic engine bulged nacelle, were the only onboard armament available. In the latest versions, two additional 7,7mm Breda-SAFAT machineguns were incorporated in the wings. The Northrop F-5 was developed during the 1960s to meet the requirements of a number of NATO countries that needed a simple, cheap and easy to maintain multi-role fighter. Its airframe inspired the subsequent introduction of the F-5E Tiger II in the early 1970s. The two 12-cylinder Isotta Fraschini Delta RC 35 engines delivered 730 hp and allowed the Caproni to attain a maximum speed of 430 km / h. The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is one of the most famous fighters in the history of aviation and also one with the longest operational life: its history began at the end of the 50s and ended, for some air forces, in mid 2000s. Its unique airframe, with slender fuselage and very little wing surface, made this aircraft ideal as an interceptor. Article number: 510001456 Product: 1:72 F-8E Crusader The Vought F-8 Crusader was the first carrier-based fighter designed in the 1950s that attained supersonic flight capability. Due to its Pratt & Whitney turbojet engine with afterburner, it was able to exceed the then maximum speed of Mach 1.8. It entered service in the late 1950s with the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps fighter squadrons to replace the obsolete Vought F7U Cutlass. The F-8E had good operational longevity and was deployed routinely by the US until the Vietnam War. Armed with four 20mm guns installed on the sides of the large front air intake, it could carry a varied weapons load. This capability provided it with a high degree of operational flexibility on missions, utilising air-to-air missiles, rockets and bombs. Because it was armed with cannons, unlike the more modern and advanced early versions of the missile laden F-4 Phantom II, pilots nicknamed the Crusader “The last of the Gunfighters”. Article number: 510001447 Product: 1:72 Fiat BR.20 Cicogna Model Dim.: 17,3 cm SUPER DECALS SHEET FOR 5 VERSIONS - COLOR INSTRUCTIONS SHEET FIGURE NOT INCLUDED - CONTAINS ONE MODEL The BR 20 "Cicogna" low wing medium bomber was developed by the Italian aircraft manufacturer Fiat during the 1930’s. It entered into service in 1936 and was characterized by its metal frame and retractable landing gear. Modern and fast for the period, it was deployed by the "Aviazione Legionaria" and had its baptism of fire in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War. In September 1940, the "Corpo Aereo Italiano", consisting of the 13th and 43rd Stormo da Bombardamento were similarly equipped with the BR-20. The Stormi were stationed in Belgium and supported the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain. Despite operational comparisons with modern R.A.F. fighters that exposed the BR-20’s limits, it was used for the duration of WW2 on various fronts by several Regia Aeronautica bomber squadrons.
